Liebherr BluRoX

The future is circular

BluRoX is Liebherr's vacuum insulation with perlite. Instead of conventional polyurethane foam, a vacuum does the insulating, and finely crushed volcanic glass, known as perlite, keeps the vacuum stable.

“It took 10 years to develop the BluRoX technology.”

Steffen Nagel, Liebherr

30%

About 30 % more volume in the FNXa 522i, without larger outer dimensions.

A

The best energy efficiency class, made possible by BluRoX.

10years

of development before BluRoX came onto the market.

Four layers, one idea

A vacuum is the best possible insulation. This is how the wall of a BluRoX freezer is built.

Layer 1 of 4

The outer shell

Galvanised steel sheets with a white lacquered outside and a coated inside. They give the freezer a robust structure, match the white finish and are what the door seal magnet closes against.

Layer 2 of 4

High-barrier foil

Several layers of plastic and an extremely thin metallic layer. The plastic layers can be bonded to the surrounding parts with heat and separated again, and the thin aluminium layer reduces the ingress of gases, so the vacuum lasts longer.

Layer 3 of 4

Evacuated perlite

Perlite is finely crushed volcanic rock with very low thermal conductivity. Combined with a vacuum, the best possible insulation, it makes BluRoX incredibly energy efficient.

The inner liner

The inner container is made of robust PS and combines the practical with the elegant. Its contours hold the glass shelves, the ceiling light and the side wall fittings for a streamlined design.

Thinner walls. More inside.

BluRoX insulates considerably more efficiently than foam and takes up much less space. That changes the whole freezer.

More volume, same size

Thinner walls give more room inside without increasing the outer dimensions. In the FNXa 522i that means about 30 % more volume.

Maximum energy efficiency

An appliance's energy use over its whole lifetime is the biggest factor in its sustainability. BluRoX makes the best energy efficiency class possible: A.

Removing the cooling module at the bottom of a BluRoX freezer

Easy to repair

The cooling module in the FNXa 522i sits at the bottom and is easy to remove, for quick repairs or replacing spare parts.

BluRoX freezer in a forest with the Cradle to Cradle Certified bronze mark

Circular by design

Efficient. Recyclable. Repairable.

From the start, the FNXa 522i was designed to follow the principles of the circular economy. Every important part of the freezer can be recycled, which earned it the Cradle to Cradle Certified® certification in bronze.

BluRoX is the first freezer with Cradle to Cradle certification. The certification looks at, among other things, how easily a product can be repaired, recycled and become part of new products when its life is over.

Built on volcanic rock

“We had to completely redesign the product.”

Jochen Hiemeyer, Team Leader Vacuum Technology, Liebherr

Traditional freezers are usually insulated with relatively thick layers of foam. BluRoX uses a high-tech material based on crushed volcanic rock instead. It insulates considerably more efficiently and takes up much less space.

The electronics are grouped at the bottom of the freezer. That makes the components easier to replace in a repair, and easier to separate when the freezer is one day recycled.
